Plastic is becoming about as fashionable as smoking. It is our planets newest enemy and it is on the top of many countries most wanted list as legislators are enacting laws to help reduce plastic production.
Plastic has definitely got a bad rap, 40% of all plastic manufactured is for single use items which may only be used for a couple of minutes before being discarded. After that, it hopefully makes it to the recycling, but many times it does not, it either sits around in land fills waiting to be burned or ends up in our oceans.
According to National Geographic, 8 million tons of plastic escapes death by furnace by finding it's way into the oceans from coastal nations. Plastic can last up to 400 years or more. That stuff does not decay or decompose which is why it is so dangerous for our planet.
However, let's take a step back to why plastic was very important to the world's industrial revolution. As stated by, National Geographic, "Plastics revolutionized medicine with life-saving devices, made space travel possible, lightened cars and jets—saving fuel and pollution—and saved lives with helmets, incubators, and equipment for clean drinking water."
The dangers came in when plastics became a single use convenience that led to our current consumer throw-away habits. Plastic water bottles, straws, cutlery, packaging...if you start looking you will see it is EVERYWHERE and most of the times used unnecessarily.
Now as humans we are creatures of habit. Habits take a long time to create and equally as long to break. The first step to change is just to have awareness. Shaming people into change will not work. It is our mission at b'freely to bring awareness to matters like this and create solutions that help make it easier for people to begin to change their habits in ways that are meaningful to them. We are trying to encourage change one step at a time. Check out our drink accessory collection.
